THE HEADQUARTERS · ONE AMGEN CENTER DRIVE

A former industrial park turned into a walkable biotech campus

Amgen began in a single building in Thousand Oaks and bought neighbouring properties as they came up. Its architects, Johnson Fain, made the campus about “the spaces in between”: a central meadow, plazas, water features and paths, with cars moved to perimeter parking structures so about 5,000 people walk or take shuttles around a park-like site with views of the coastal mountains. PEI Architects designed the executive offices around a two-storey glass atrium under a skylight.

  • 120-acre site
  • Master plan: Johnson Fain
  • Landscape: Studio-MLA
  • Executive offices: PEI Architects
  • ≈ 5,000 people on campus
  • Childcare and fitness center on site
