THE NEWEST BUILDINGS · 2021–2022

A college campus for 10,600 people, built around a lake

Nike chose low buildings spread across the landscape instead of towers, arranged like a college quad around a man-made lake. The soil dug for the lake became a tree-lined berm with running paths. The newest additions are the LeBron James Innovation Center, home of the Nike Sport Research Lab, and the 1-million-sq-ft Serena Williams Building, where design, insights and merchandising teams work together for the first time.

Office history: from a basement laundry room to a 400-acre campus

  1. 1964
A basement on SE Claybourne, Portland

Phil Knight and his former coach Bill Bowerman shook hands on a partnership at lunch in Portland on January 25, 1964, and Blue Ribbon Sports was born. In April, 300 pairs of shoes arrived at Knight's parents' house on SE Claybourne; he stacked them in the basement laundry room — the first office.

    SE 50th and Powell Boulevard — $50 a month

The first real office: a small building in southeast Portland that was office, warehouse, sales office and shop at once. Rent was $50 a month, and the jukebox at the tavern next door started every day at 4 p.m.

    Tigard, Beaverton and back again

Blue Ribbon Sports moved again and again: to Tigard's Horace Mann building, to Beaverton, back to Tigard near Nimbus Drive, then to two offices on Murray Boulevard in Beaverton known as “Murray I” and “Murray II.” Along the way the company took the name Nike.

By the early 1980s employees were spread across more than 20 buildings around Portland. In 1984 Nike paid $5.5 million in cash for a 75-acre parcel just north of its Beaverton offices, then waited until 1987, when it had sharpened its identity as a performance company, to start planning.
