THE HEAD OFFICE · BARAJAS, MADRID

A courtyard turned into the building's lungs

KPF, working with Rafael de La-Hoz Arquitectos, took the large internal courtyard of Spanish building tradition and turned it into a climate-controlled atrium for Madrid's harsh winters. The 33,000 sq ft atrium acts as the building's lungs: with operable windows, it ventilates the 90,400 m² head office naturally, with no conventional air-conditioning. It is also the main circulation space, welcoming visitors and employees, and the flexible work spaces are arranged around it.
