THE HEADQUARTERS · MYTHENQUAI 2 · 1900 / 2021

A restored palace, prism-glass wings and three stone courtyards

Adolf Krischanitz joined Zurich's listed buildings on Mythenquai to a comb-like, slightly taller new structure. Along Alfred-Escher-Strasse it wears local Bollinger sandstone; toward the lake, a crystalline façade of glass prisms that breaks and recomposes the reflections of its neighbours. The stairwells of the 1900 building were returned to their original state and lit with Krischanitz's pearl-string lamps. Inside the new buildings, desks are not assigned: an app opens the doors and shows which desks are free, all workplaces sit near windows facing the lake or the Arboretum park, and movable “Dancing Walls” reshape the rooms. Lake water from 11 metres below the surface heats and cools the whole campus.
