Seven four-storey “habitats” stacked into a timber tower

SHoP Architects and BVN, chosen in a global competition, designed Atlassian Central next to Sydney's Central Station. Inside a steel exoskeleton, the workplace floors are grouped into seven four-storey mass-timber “habitats”, each with a naturally ventilated park; operable façades let large parts of each floor run without mechanical cooling, and rooftop terraces sit on top. The heritage Parcels Shed was taken apart and rebuilt at the base as the entrance, and the first five storeys hold a 137-room YHA hotel.

Mike Cannon-Brookes and Scott Farquhar met on the same scholarship course at the University of New South Wales in 1998 and started Atlassian in Sydney in 2002, “armed with a credit card and a dream”. Jira 1.0 launched the same year.

The Bay Area overtakes Sydney
Bay Area offices grew to about 301,000 sq ft in 2018 and 419,000 sq ft in 2019, larger than Sydney's 238,000 sq ft. Atlassian, Inc. was based at 350 Bush Street, San Francisco; a Bengaluru office opened in 2018.

TEAM Anywhere
Atlassian announced TEAM Anywhere, letting employees work from (almost) anywhere. In February 2020 it had also leased about 158,000 sq ft in a building under construction in Austin, Texas.

A U.S. company, and a tower begins
On September 30, 2022 Atlassian redomesticated from England and Wales to Delaware; its principal executive offices became 350 Bush Street, San Francisco. Construction of Atlassian Central in Sydney started the same year.

In March 2023 Atlassian decided to consolidate its leases. Principal offices fell to about 167,000 sq ft in Sydney and 146,000 sq ft in the Bay Area, with 130,000 sq ft in San Francisco put up for sublease.

Atlassian Central nears completion
The 39-storey tower at 8–10 Lee Street, Haymarket was in its final construction stage in October 2026, with Atlassian as anchor tenant on a lease of about 15 years. Today's global HQ remains 341 George Street.
