No office you have to commute to: Shopify works remote-first and meets in five “Ports” — clubhouses for hack days and team Bursts.

How a company that once built a slide, a go-kart track and a ski chalet into its Ottawa floors went “digital by design” — then the benefits, the people and 20 years of addresses. Every fact from Shopify's own filings and careers pages.

DIGITAL BY DESIGN · PORTS IN FIVE CITIES

From themed floors to “Ports”: offices you visit, not commute to

In May 2020 Shopify declared itself “digital by default” and said “office centricity is over”. It cut back its leased space and reworked what was left into Ports — “kinda like clubhouses” where teams from different groups meet to hack, pair and solve hard problems. Employees can drop in whenever they are in town (“Local Access”). Before that, Shopify's Ottawa offices by Linebox Studio were known for a different theme on every floor: a Canadiana chalet, shipping-container meeting pods, a slide between floors and an indoor go-kart track.

What Shopify does

Shopify calls itself “essential internet infrastructure for commerce”: one platform for starting, running and growing a business online, in stores and on other channels. It began in 2004 as a snowboard shop, Snowdevil, whose founders built their own store software.

Two revenue streams: subscription solutions (plans, POS Pro, apps, themes, domains) and merchant solutions (mainly Shopify Payments, plus lending, shipping labels, POS hardware and advertising).
