A vertical campus with two-story neighborhoods and an indoor park
Gensler designed The Tower at PNC Plaza as a vertical campus. Pairs of office floors are joined by two-story neighborhoods — light-filled areas with slightly different furniture on each, meant to get people moving between floors. Ninety-two percent of workspaces have access to direct sunlight, and every employee gets fresh air through the double-skin facade. There is a full-service cafeteria with indoor and outdoor seating, an indoor park with plants and city views, locker rooms, bike racks and The James E. Rohr Auditorium.

Two-story neighborhoods

The indoor park and the Beacon
An indoor park with plants, furniture, fresh air and views of the city sits high in the tower. Downstairs, a column of light called the Beacon rises in the corner lobby.

Cafeteria, auditorium and terraces
The tower has a full-service cafeteria with indoor and outdoor seating and The James E. Rohr Auditorium for employee and client events.

A facade that breathes
A double-skin facade lets fresh air in through windows that open and close by themselves, and a solar chimney in the core draws warm air up and out. PNC expected 50% less energy and 77% less water than a typical office.

Office history: one corner of downtown Pittsburgh
- 1865 Wood Street, one door from Fifth Avenue
PNC's Pittsburgh roots go back to the Pittsburgh Trust and Savings Company, chaired by James E. Laughlin of Jones & Laughlin. It became the First National Bank of Pittsburgh — the first in the city to become a national bank — with its headquarters on Wood Street, one door from the corner of Fifth Avenue. The bank has done business at that spot ever since.
