A glass airfoil above a terraced podium

HKS shaped the all-glass tower like an airfoil, with stacked two-story collaboration spaces on opposite corners. Inside, a six-story lobby with terraced balconies leads to a sky lobby and conference floors; the podium holds landscaped terraces, a large employee cafeteria and a full-size basketball court. In the lobby hangs “Bocci”: 240 hand-blown glass bulbs on more than a mile of copper pipe, dropping 70 feet.

Block A by Gensler (2022)

Block A, by Gensler, is two towers of 12 and 19 stories joined by a glass atrium, completed in 2022 for more than 3,000 associates.

Born as Signet Bank's credit card division
Until November 22, 1994 the business was a division of Signet Bank. That day it was separated into its own company and sold shares to the public; Signet handed out the rest of its shares in February 1995. Card operations ran from about 450,000 sq ft (≈ 41,806 m²) of owned offices in Richmond, Virginia.

1680 Capital One Drive, McLean — a 14-story curved-glass tower
A new 570,000 sq ft (≈ 52,955 m²) headquarters beside the Capital Beltway, first leased with an option to buy. Bonstra | Haresign Architects describes a 14-story tower whose curved glass facade acts as “a billboard for drivers passing on the highway”, completed in 2003.

Buying the headquarters and its 31 acres
In December 2005 Capital One exercised its option to buy the McLean building and its 31 acres of land. Near Richmond it also owned about 316 acres in Goochland County for the West Creek campus, which by 2008 had seven office buildings, a support facility and a training center.

The 31-story HKS tower
The new headquarters tower, designed by HKS to bring about 1,800 area associates together, rose next to the 2003 building. HKS calls it the tallest office building in the Washington, D.C. area. It won the Tysons Corner Chamber of Commerce Skyline Luminary Award in 2018.

Capital One started in 1994 as the credit card division of Signet Bank. Today it is the largest credit card issuer in the U.S. by card loans and one of the nation's largest banks by deposits. With Discover, bought in May 2025, it also runs the Discover, PULSE and Diners Club payment networks.
