NO HEADQUARTERS · DISTRIBUTED SINCE 2020
A company without a headquarters — and a 1929 department store in Oakland
Since 2020 Block has had no designated headquarters: for most roles, people work inside or outside a Block office as they choose. The address it must name for the SEC is Uptown Station in Oakland — the 1929 Capwell's department store, rebuilt as an eight-story office with loft ceilings, exposed steel trusses and a multi-story atrium under a glass skylight. Instead of a big corporate cafeteria, the ground floor became a public marketplace.
- No designated HQ since 2020
- Uptown Station: 356,000 sq ft (≈ 33,074 m²)
- Built 1929 as Capwell's
- Directly above a BART station
- Offices in New York, Oakland, St. Louis
