THE NEWEST BUILDING ON THE HEAD-OFFICE SITE · TECHNOLOGY CUBE · 2025

An eight-storey lab built so any office can become a lab

Technology CUBE, at the head-office address 1006 Kadoma, is the first R&D hub newly built there in about 30 years. Research sits on the 8th floor, development in the middle and production engineering below; a 900 mm grid and a steel grid ceiling let any office be turned into a lab. On the 5th floor, the “Nature Square” atrium rises four storeys: plants are misted with water and wind, 40 channels of sound play nature through the space, and the skylight changes colour temperature with the time of day. The 5th and 8th floors are co-creation floors open to universities, start-ups and partners, and every floor has a kitchen area, with self-build kitchens on the 6th and 7th floors. Tables and benches are made from thinned wood and factory scraps.

Office history: from a rented house in Osaka to 93 years in Kadoma

  1. 1918
    A rented two-storey house in Ohiraki-cho, Osaka

On March 7, 1918, Konosuke Matsushita moved from a cramped home in Ikaino to a larger rented two-storey house in Ohiraki-cho (today Ohiraki 2-chome, Fukushima-ku) and founded Matsushita Electric Housewares Manufacturing Works. Three ground-floor rooms became the workshop, with two hand-operated presses and a staff of three: Konosuke, his wife Mumeno and her brother Toshio Iue. By the end of the year there were 20 people.

The first head office and factory, designed by the founder

Production outgrew the house and the neighbouring one. Matsushita leased a site of about 230 m² nearby, designed the factory and office himself, and they were completed in July 1922; by the end of the year more than 50 people worked there. A second head office and factory followed in the same Ohiraki area.

  3. 1933
The third head office: a 70,000 m² complex in rural Kadoma

With more than 1,200 employees and 200 products, Matsushita built a new head office and factory complex on land in Kadoma, northeast of Osaka, first bought for an employee training school. The company moved into the 70,000 m² facility in 1933 and introduced its divisional system the same year. The head office had French roof tiles on the ground floor, Spanish tiles above and a ship's wheel bought in Kobe as a symbol of steering the company.
