Office history: four moves in 23 years, then 127 years in Holthausen

  1. 1876
Aachen — a factory in a rear courtyard

On September 26, 1876, Fritz Henkel and two partners registered Henkel & Cie in Aachen and launched their first product, a universal detergent based on silicate.

  2. 1878
Düsseldorf-Flingern — closer to the Rhine and Ruhr

Henkel moved from Aachen to a leased factory in Düsseldorf-Flingern, bringing the business closer to the big markets of the Rhine and Ruhr area. Henkel's Bleich-Soda became an immediate success the same year.

  3. 1880
    Düsseldorf-Oberbilk — a place to grow

After two years the Flingern factory was too small, and the fast-growing company moved to new, larger premises in Düsseldorf-Oberbilk.

Holthausen — a 55,000 m² plot outside the city

Fritz Henkel bought a 55,000 m² plot outside Düsseldorf's city limits (Holthausen joined Düsseldorf in 1929). Production began on March 9, 1900, with about 70 workers and seven clerks. Henkel has been here ever since.
