THE HEADQUARTERS TODAY · MONADNOCK BUILDING

A hotel-like ground floor inside a 1906-era landmark

Notion's expanded headquarters fills the landmarked 10-story Monadnock Building on Market Street. IA turned the first and second floors into amenity and gathering spaces: a concierge reception around a barista café, a new opening to an interior courtyard, a curved staircase with built-in banquettes, an all-hands lounge that doubles as the lunchroom, a social club lounge, a training room facing Market Street, a wood-paneled library and a deep-focus room. Translucent curtains open and close spaces, and Notion's signature red appears in details such as wayfinding. Brereton Architect completed the interior fit-out of the offices, keeping exposed structure, masonry and metalwork.

Office history: from a flat in Japan to a Market Street landmark

  1. 2013
    Started in San Francisco

Notion started in 2013 and first debuted in San Francisco. Its original pitch deck already described an all-in-one tool and a marketplace of things built on it.

  2. 2013–18
The “lost years” and a flat in Japan

Notion was rebuilt four times and nearly died. With the right product but the wrong tech stack, co-founders Ivan Zhao and Simon Last went to Japan and rewrote it from a flat there — which is why the main code repository is still called “notion-next”.

Office #3 and 30 shades of white

Back in San Francisco, the team tried 30 shades of warm white for an office wall. Co-founder Akshay Kothari painted office #3 himself, in Benjamin Moore OC-97 “Cream Froth”.

The Notion 2.0 launch on Product Hunt brought the first signs of traction. Notion passed 1 million users in 2020 and 100 million in 2024.
