THE HEADQUARTERS · AZUMABASHI · 1989

A tower shaped like a mug of beer, with a golden flame next door

Asahi built its headquarters for its 100th anniversary on part of the site of its old Azumabashi Brewery. The tower's amber mirrored glass is meant to look like freshly poured beer up to the 20th floor; the 21st and 22nd floors are clad in white like a frothy head, and they house a panoramic restaurant. Next door, the Asahi Group Hall by Philippe Starck carries the golden Flamme d’Or, and inside takes its cues from a luxury cruise ship: columns shaped like beer foam and white marble staircases.

  • Nearly 100 m tall
  • Amber glass to the 20th floor, white “foam” on 21–22
  • Completed October 1989
  • Design: Nikken Sekkei · Philippe Starck · GETT
  • Built for Asahi's centennial
