THE HEADQUARTERS · GERLINGEN-SCHILLERHÖHE

A head office in the woods above Stuttgart

Bosch moved its head office out of crowded central Stuttgart to the Schillerhöhe in 1970. The campus sits in the Glemswald forest, next to open meadows and footpaths, so breaks can be taken under the trees. After the researchers moved to Renningen, SFP Architekten stripped a 32,500 m² laboratory building back to its concrete frame and rebuilt it as modern offices with communication zones, a café and conference areas, under Bosch's “Inspiring Working Conditions” program. Today the site offers co-working areas and quiet retreat zones.

  1. 1886
A workshop in a Stuttgart backyard

In November 1886 Robert Bosch opened his “Workshop for Precision Mechanics and Electrical Engineering” in a courtyard building at 75B Rotebühlstrasse in western Stuttgart, with one journeyman and one errand boy. In 1890 he put up a sign so customers could find it.

  2. 1900–01
The first factory of its own

After several moves between rented rooms, Bosch bought a house with a large yard nearby in March 1900. On April 1, 1901, 45 associates moved into the new “Elektrotechnische Fabrik Robert Bosch” — Stuttgart's first reinforced-concrete building, with a Renaissance-style sandstone façade.

A second factory in the backyard

Demand was so strong that Bosch needed every floor for itself and built a second factory behind the first. Within a few years the single building had grown into a sizeable site in the city centre.
