Three office blocks joined by an indoor “BASF Street”

D105 is a multi-functional office and conference building in the southern part of the Ludwigshafen site. A “BASF Street” runs across its three rhythmically divided blocks like a mall, spanned by bridges, with the stairs, a bistro and the canteens along it — and the boundary of the factory site runs right through the building. BASF says it was opened in summer 2015 with conference facilities, a modern canteen and multifunctional offices for 1,200 employees. Inside are heated and chilled ceilings, a staff canteen under a wave-shaped ceiling with built-in LED lights, and a conference area with its own stage; many BASF products were used in the building, and its flat roof is a walkable green roof.

  • Design: HPP Hentrich-Petschnigg & Partner
  • 38,000 m² net floor area (≈ 409,028 sq ft)
  • Offices for 1,200 employees
  • DGNB Platinum certificate
  • Walkable green roof

Office history: from a Mannheim gas works to an office on the factory boundary

  1. 1865
Founded in Mannheim, built in Ludwigshafen

Friedrich Engelhorn, owner of a coal gas company in Mannheim, founded the stock corporation “Badische Anilin- & Sodafabrik” in Mannheim on April 6, 1865. When attempts to buy land on the Baden side of the Rhine failed, the plants were built on the opposite bank in Ludwigshafen, then part of the Kingdom of Bavaria.

What BASF does

BASF began in 1865 making dyes from coal tar. Today it says it wants to be “the preferred chemical company to enable our customers’ green transformation”, selling to almost every industry from cars and farming to construction and consumer goods. Its Ludwigshafen site is the model for the “Verbund”, where plants, energy and logistics are linked to use resources efficiently.
