THE HEADQUARTERS · TOUR SAINT-GOBAIN · 2020

A glass tower that shows off what the company makes

Valode & Pistre designed the tower as an assembly of “crystals”: by playing with faces, angles and types of glass, it is alternately transparent or reflective. Large greenhouses with Mediterranean plants and planted gardens on every floor bring nature inside, and an off-centre core keeps the floors flexible. Inside are more than 300 places to work — bubbles, alcoves, booths and 145 bookable meeting rooms — plus a 267 m² auditorium. On the 37th floor, the Plein-ciel space has a 360° view over La Défense, about 160 m up, behind SageGlass electrochromic glass that tints on demand.

Office history: from a royal mirror workshop to a glass tower

  1. 1665
Faubourg Saint-Antoine, Paris — the royal mirror manufactory

In October 1665 Louis XIV signed letters patent creating the Manufacture royale de glaces à miroirs, at the urging of his minister Colbert, to break Venice's hold on Europe's mirror market. The workshop was set up in the faubourg Saint-Antoine in Paris; its early years were technically and financially hard.

  2. 1692
The village of Saint-Gobain, Picardy — where the name comes from

A glassworks opened in the village of Saint-Gobain, using a revolutionary process: casting glass on a metal table. It was first run by the rival Compagnie Thévart; the two companies merged a few years later under royal pressure, and Saint-Gobain became the main production site that gave the company its name.

A new head office opened in Neuilly in 1959, replacing the 1900 building on the place des Saussaies — a modern showcase and the nerve centre of an international group. In June 1970 the new leadership of Saint-Gobain-Pont-à-Mousson was photographed there.
