THE HEADQUARTERS · 21–25 AVENUE MATIGNON · 2025

Three buildings, one garden, and terraces on every level

AXA's global headquarters sits steps from the Élysée Palace: the 18th-century Hôtel de La Vaupalière plus two office buildings from the 1950s and 1960s. PCA-STREAM tied them together with a shared basement hub, new entrances onto a partly heritage-listed garden, and a planted “landscape façade” on the Rabelais building with terraces and a rooftop. A working café and restaurant open onto the garden.

  • 19,480 m² (≈ 209,681 sq ft)
  • Garden 1,700 m², 50% more trees
  • ≈ 1,500 m² of planted terraces & balconies
  • Design: PCA-STREAM
  • Landscape: Coloco, Mugo & Camille Muller
  • MIPIM Award 2026

The garden and planted façades

A 1,700 m² garden with 50% more trees, and about 1,500 m² of planted terraces and balconies, now tie the complex together.

Office history: from Rouen to avenue Matignon

  1. Early 1800s
    A small mutual in Rouen

AXA traces its roots to Ancienne Mutuelle de Rouen, a Normandy mutual created in the early 19th century and specialised in property and casualty insurance.

  2. 1968
Belbeuf — 22,000 m² of very modern offices

Ancienne Mutuelle inaugurated a new headquarters in Belbeuf, outside Rouen: 22,000 m² (≈ 236,806 sq ft) of offices whose construction cost almost 10% of the company's assets — built to shed the image of a “small provincial mutual”.

  3. 1985
A new name for a national group

After the 1982 acquisition of Drouot gave it a nationwide presence, Mutuelles Unies launched the name AXA — short, readable in every language and first in alphabetical lists.

    Avenue Matignon, Paris

The Group's Paris site — the 18th-century Hôtel de La Vaupalière and two 1950s–60s office buildings — was restructured in the 1990s by Ricardo Bofill's Taller de Arquitectura, who added two contemporary wings and a glazed courtyard.
