THE HEADQUARTERS · NEC SUPERTOWER · 1990

A tapering tower with an open space through the middle

NEC calls its head office a three-stage “rocket” that gets thinner as it rises. A large opening through the building cuts the swirling wind that tall towers usually cause, about 65% of the site is green, and around 280 trees 8–10 m tall were planted as a windbreak. Inside, the old staff canteen on the 11th floor became FIELD in 2021: about 490 seats with few partitions, a bakery café from early morning, live-cooked lunches and space for 1-on-1s, brainstorms and seminars.

  • 43 floors above ground, 4 below
  • 145,100 m² (≈ 1,561,842 sq ft)
  • Design: Nikken Sekkei

  • Face-recognition gates since 2020
