Starbucks Center, SoDo · Mannivu / CC BY-SA 4.0 · Wikimedia Commons 02Starbucks · Seattle, Washington
Starbucks runs the company from a 1912 Sears catalog warehouse in SoDo — with a gym, a daycare and dry cleaning under the same roof.
- 2.1M sq ft Starbucks Center, a former Sears building
- 230,000+ partners got Bean Stock in FY2025
- 18 weeks fully paid leave for birth parents (U.S.)
The building was put up in 1912 by the Union Pacific Railroad to lure Sears, Roebuck & Co. to Seattle, with heavy timbers from the historic Yesler Mill. Today it is a 2.1 million sq ft mixed-use complex, and Starbucks' office inside it — the “Support Center” — has an on-site gym, daycare and dry cleaning, a coffee bar that serves every drink in a returnable cup, and the Tryer Center innovation lab.

The renovated campus in Bellevue · Photo: Heywood Chan (via MGAC) 05T-Mobile US · Bellevue, Washington
A vintage Airstream serving frozen yogurt, a campus pub and a grand staircase that doubles as an amphitheater — inside T-Mobile's renovated Bellevue headquarters.
- 40,000 sq ft amenity centerpiece at the HQ
- 6,200+ people on the Bellevue campus (2018)
- 12 weeks fully paid leave for birth parents
In 2018 T-Mobile renewed its Bellevue lease through 2030 and began a $160 million renovation with its landlord Ivanhoe Cambridge. Gensler joined the separate buildings with colorful skybridges, built two amenity floors with six dining kiosks, a Starbucks, a pub and a vintage Airstream serving frozen yogurt, and moved most people to unassigned desks — high-top tables, lounges, huddle rooms and quiet rooms.

The 40-acre waterfront campus, 2021 · Photo: ZGF Architects 06Expedia Group · Seattle, Washington
Three old biotech labs on Elliott Bay became a 40-acre waterfront campus with a public beach, an amphitheater big enough for all 5,000 Seattle employees and not a single assigned desk.
- 40 acres waterfront campus in Seattle
- 600 seats in the campus market hall
- 4 weeks a year to work from another Expedia office
ZGF turned three 1990s biotech lab buildings into 600,000 sq ft of open offices and added a new 350,000 sq ft curved building. There are no private offices and no assigned seats: teams sit in “neighborhoods” with focus rooms and hoteling desks. A daylit atrium hosts all-hands meetings, a 600-seat market hall serves food from morning to night, bridges join the buildings, and sliding glass doors open to views of Puget Sound. Five large murals by Ethan Murrow are painted straight onto the walls. Outside, Surfacedesign restored the beach and planted a cherry orchard, gardens and a 12,000 sq ft cascading water feature.

The headquarters on Occidental Park · © Mithun 07Weyerhaeuser · Seattle, Washington
A timber company's headquarters built entirely with lumber from its own mill, on a tree-lined square in Seattle's oldest neighborhood.
- 158,000 sq ft Mithun-designed headquarters, 2016
- 100% of the lumber from Weyerhaeuser's Longview mill
- 9 employee resource groups, open to all
Mithun designed both the eight-story building and Weyerhaeuser's interiors. Timber shows up in many forms as a tribute to the raw material, the pioneer history and working forests. Open workspaces, multi-purpose cafés and rooms for group work are spread out to mix departments; daylight, natural ventilation and open stairs are meant to keep people moving. Rooftop meeting rooms, gathering spaces and gardens look out over the city and Elliott Bay, and the building's lumber all came from Weyerhaeuser's own mill in Longview, Washington.

Lounge with a city view · Photo: Garrett Rowland, Cleary O’Farrell / JPC Architects 08Zillow · Seattle, Washington
Zillow calls its headquarters “Cloud HQ”: 97% of employees can work wherever they are most productive, and its Seattle tower office has shrunk from 387,765 to 113,470 sq ft.
- 97% of employees choose where they work
- 6 weeks sabbatical after 6 years
- 20 weeks fully paid leave for delivering parents
Zillow's Seattle headquarters is in the 42-story tower at 1301 Second Avenue, and where it planned to fill floors 29 to 40 by 2017. JPC Architects refreshed 155,000 sq ft with a different look on each floor — varied textures, colors, pops of color and creative breakout spaces tied by one design thread. Since the permanent move to flexible work, Zillow says it has redesigned its offices with more room for collaboration and event spaces for team gatherings.

Reception · © Gensler 09Davis Wright Tremaine · Seattle, Washington
Davis Wright Tremaine removed the corner offices from its Seattle headquarters and gave the space to meeting rooms instead.
- 1,300+ attorneys and business professionals
- 8 weeks paid parental leave at full pay (staff)
- 52% of staff with 5+ years of service
Gensler helped Davis Wright Tremaine choose the site and design its new downtown Seattle headquarters, using its research on legal workplaces. The firm wanted a hospitality experience: an expansive reception area can host large functions. Office sizes were standardised and corner offices removed to make room for meeting spaces. Glass office fronts let daylight reach the interior and open up views, and an interconnecting stair joins all floors so lawyers and staff move easily between them.
